There are 3 fundamental functions of education in every community: 1) Discover new knowledge, 2) Teach skills the community needs to thrive, and 3) Provide an opportunity for personal growth and enrichment.
The great thing is that these three functions are intimately interwoven. The process of discovering new knowledge is based on the actions of individuals striving for personal growth and enrichment and on the actions of teachers throughout the community passing on the knowledge already known to the next generation of researchers. Communities thrive by ensuring the members of the community have the skills needed to maximize the resources available to that community. Communities thrive building enduring systems that span multiple generations.
Education is a virtual “Perpetual Motion Machine” for the community. Education provides the community with the self-reinforcing system that can ensure success.
From the CERN Large Hadron Collider to medical research labs to a single inventor working in a garage the community needs to discover new knowledge. And once that knowledge is discovered.
